Yoga
Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning to yoke, join, unite, or union. Sanskrit is an ancient language of India, where yoga originated. Yoga works like a science, focusing on the breath, body and mind, which brings them all together through physical and mental exercises.
Yoga is a union between body, mind, and spirit. It involves practice of physical postures or poses to create balance in the body, mind, and spirit. In order to create this balance within oneself, physical movements, breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, and relaxation techniques are all part of yoga.
Vinyasa yoga is an aerobic and meditative practice. This style of yoga was primarily brought to this country by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois from India. Jois was a student of Krishamaracharya and Krishamaracharya translated the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali. Pattabhi Jois is considered today to be the guru of Ashtanga yoga.
Vinyasa yoga is unique because it combines postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and linking postures by breath and movements (vinyasa). Vinyasa Yoga focuses on correct breathing which:
- Induces elimination of toxins
- Purifies the body
- De-stresses
- Reshapes the body
- Keeps the circulatory system fresh with oxygenated blood
- Gives mental peace and tranquility to the mind
Benefits of Yoga
When practiced regularly, it will lead oneself to a healthier body inside and out, a calmer mind, and a more stress-free life. Today, more and more people are turning to yoga to alleviate chronic health problems and attain peace of mind. Most people think yoga is merely a physical activity that involves stretching. This is true, yoga is stretching, but it also has a long list of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits. Some benefits include:
- More restful sleep
- Increased energy
- Improved muscle tone
- Greater flexibility
- Stress relief
- Overall feeling of emotional and physical wellbeing
There are many different styles of yoga: Raja yoga, Iyengar yoga, and Hatha yoga, just to name a few, but they all have the same goals. The style of yoga that is offered at Epiphany is Vinyasa yoga.
